Annual Track and Field Day
Alyeska’s 12th Annual Track and Field Day in Fairbanks in
June gave kids a chance to prove their strength and speed,
and also allowed at least one child to show his character.
Jason Donald, 11, of North Pole, once again dominated the
games. The four-time defending champion won all of his
events. His prize? A shiny new bike.

Remote Gate Valve 72 - valve replacement focus of June
pipeline maintenance shutdown
More
than 100 employees will gather just a few miles north of
Fairbanks in late June to replace Remote Gate Valve 72. The
valve – “RGV 72” for short – is being replaced as part of a
scheduled 36-hour pipeline shutdown because its leak through
rate falls short of Alyeska’s performance standards.
Engineers tested RGV 72 in September 2007 and determined
that the valve was not sealing as designed.

Pipeline 101
Valves on TAPS
The 800
mile-long Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) has 178 valves
that control oil flow through the 48-inch mainline pipe.
Most of these valves are environmental safeguards that
ensure safe operation and limit the potential size of
spills, especially at stream crossings and other
environmentally sensitive areas.
