James "Dino" Allen
Recruiting and Relocations Manager
Designing
a diverse workforce isn’t easy, says Alyeska’s recruiting and
relocations manager—it’s downright fun. You may know him, James
“Dino” Allen: top notch Alyeska employee, event promoter,
community leader and people person. This guy has worn a lot of
hats.
Dino’s feet sprouted roots the minute they touched Alaska soil.
In 1989, the military stationed him in Anchorage where he worked
for several years in human resources. While living here, Dino
got really involved in the community, which ultimately led him
to his first Alyeska encounter. He was organizing Anchorage’s
annual Juneteenth event, a celebration that aims to educate
Alaskans on black history and famous African Americans, when he
approached Alyeska for a donation. Alyeska quickly complied and
the impression was permanent, “I thought it was outstanding that
here was a company that cared about community,” said Dino.
When did you start working for Alyeska?
It was 2001 and I was working for the state. I applied and
interviewed first with my future boss and then the president at
the time, David Wight. I was hired as an employee concerns
program coordinator. Here at Alyeska it’s standard to meet your
boss’s boss.
Tell us about your career at Alyeska—what are your highs?
I worked in Valdez for four years as a human resources
generalist—that was a high in itself. I loved living in nature,
organizing community events and just being a part of the
community. Working for my side business, D&D Productions, I
would put together comedy shows and other events. One year I
participated in a Valdez spin-off of American Idol and was
instrumental in organizing and fundraising for the annual fly-in
show. I missed the small community vibe so when we came back to
Anchorage we moved to Eagle River.
In your eyes, what makes a good Alyeska employee?
A good Alyeska employee has qualities like diversity, inner
strength and vision. They have to be able to see the big
picture. You want an employee who brings energy to the table,
you know, something a little different. You can’t get creativity
out of a group of people who are all the same—you need
perspective. It’s my job to make sure we have a diverse
applicant pool from the very beginning.
What’s your definition of diversity?
Diversity means listening to all ideas on the table before
deciding to move forward. The more diverse, the better the end
product.
What do you see in your future at Alyeska?
My future looks very bright. I foresee opportunities that enable
me to take on more managerial responsibilities. I’ve got a good
background filled with the right education and experience. I can
be a great resource, a great asset.
How do you feel about your current job?
I’ve got the best job in the company. I’m the front door.
