ANCHORAGE, AK –
For the 10th
consecutive year, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company’s Valdez
Marine Terminal Fire Brigade won the Alaska Firefighter
Competition Governor’s Trophy at the 2008 Statewide Firefighting
Conference. The team has won the Governor’s Trophy 14 times
since 1993. Alyeska Fire Chief Brian Beauvais credits this run
to the team’s high level of proficiency, professionalism and
teamwork.
The brigade also
took first place in four separate events: the ladder raise; fire
extinguisher; make and break; and the self-contained breathing
apparatus.
This years’
competition was held in Juneau with eight fire teams from around the
state competing. The conference attendees also participated in more
than 400 hours of training that included classroom and hands-on
training workshops and evolutions.
Alyeska’s
competition team includes Brian Beauvais, Justin Major, Steve
McCann, Matt Smelcer, Jennifer Stubblefield, Ken White, and Sean
Wisner.
Alyeska Fire
Brigade members say they benefit from their group’s diversity, as
it’s made up of technicians from groups across the Valdez Marine
Terminal, including Oil Movements and Storage, Power Vapor, Marine,
Maintenance, Instrument/Electricians, and Ballast Water Treatment.
“When there is
an emergency, the team has an expert represented from all areas of
the terminal,” said Brian
Beauvais, Alyeska’s
Fire Chief, Fire Safety Industrial Hygiene Supervisor. “And that
diversity is what makes our brigade so strong.
“It was a
pleasure attending the Alaska State Firefighters Conference in
Juneau,”
Beauvais said. “Once again, the firefighters
represented Alyeska Pipeline in an exceptional manner. From
assisting the instructors during training evolutions, to building
relationships and camaraderie throughout the fire service, they
showed what true professionals they really are. The Alyeska
Firefighters continually strive for a level of safety that leads the
fire service in the state of Alaska.”
The Valdez
Brigade consists of 60 professional firefighters – 16 full-time
firefighters contracted through Doyon Universal Services, and 44
trained Alyeska technicians who provide fire and rescue services on
the terminal. Alyeska has six fire and rescue apparatus, including
one ambulance on the terminal.
