Electrification &
Automation Project Overview
What is Electrification &
Automation?
Electrification & Automation (E&A) is part of Alyeska's overall vision to renew
assets and its organization. E&A began in 2001 and concentrates on reducing
physical infrastructure and simplifying operations and maintenance. The
program goal is to position TAPS for
more efficient operation while maintaining or enhancing safety,
operational integrity and environmental performance. The new system is
modular and scalable and will
provide more flexibility for future increases or decreases in
throughput. A more cost effective transportation system will better
position the North Slope for future exploration, development and
production. In 2006, a decision was made to focus on converting one
station at a time. Pump Station 9 near Delta Junction was selected as
the first station to upgrade. It will be followed by Pump Station 3,
Pump Station 4 and Pump Station 1.

Automation News
Electrification & Automation scheduled for
Pump Station 1
With Electrification & Automation at
Pump Station 4 operational, focus turns to
completing Pump Station 1, where Alyeska’s
Major Maintenance Department will manage the
remaining work over the next couple of
years. - Published August 2009
Electrification & Automation update
The Electrification & Automation Program was initiated to
replace the existing control systems and
equipment at Pump Stations 1, 3, 4 and 9
with modern technology designed to adjust to
future throughput levels. As of June 2009,
this program is nearly three quarters
complete. - Published June 2009
Forward flow achieved at Pump Station 4
An important milestone in Alyeska’s Electrification and
Automation project was reached as forward
flow of North Slope crude oil was achieved
at Pump Station 4. - Published

Electrification and Automation at Pump
Station 4 nearly complete
Electrification and Automation work at Pump
Station 4 nearing completion, and the focus
is now on commissioning work which is
underway. Two mini-shutdowns are scheduled
for early to mid-May for work needing to be
performed before forward flow can occur. - Published

Upgrades made to Pump Station 3
Electrification & Automation equipment
The
new Pump Station 3 (PS 3) Electification &
Automation (E&A) pumps will taken offline,
and legacy pumps will operate at PS 3 for
approximately 36 hours. During this
period we will make vendor-recommended
modifications to the E&A Variable Frequency
Drive (VFD) software. - Published August 2008
Forward Flow achieved at Pump Station 3
Today, February 12, 2008, with the restart
of the E&A pumps at Pump Station 3, oil is
now flowing through new E&A equipment at two
of the planned four E&A pump stations. This
occasion provides a good opportunity to
reflect, and take a look ahead. - Published

Reconfigured pumps at PS 9 reach
one-year milestone
It has been over a year since
Alyeska started moving oil at Pump Station 9 with the new equipment
installed as part of E&A. The E&A project
involves installing electrically driven crude oil pumps at four critical
pump stations (1, 3, 4 and 9) combined with increased automation and
upgraded control systems - Published February 2008
Electrification &
Automation work unfolding at Pump Station 3
Alyeska crews recently passed another Electrification & Automation Project
milestone, with this summer’s startup of the 2.25 megawatt Diesel
Generator at Pump Station 3 (PS 3). The first fire of that generator at
9:15 a.m. on July 30 started the clock ticking, giving crews 270 days to
meet provisions for the pump station’s new air permit and separate the
station from the existing legacy equipment - Published September 2007 |
